Tropical Storm Alex drenches South Florida and heads toward Bermuda with high winds

The first named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season is headed toward Bermuda after dumping rain on Florida, flooding some roads.

Alex reached tropical storm force after strengthening off Florida’s east coast early Sunday.

National Hurricane Center forecasters say Alex had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph and was centered about 635 miles west-southwest of Bermuda on Sunday morning. It was moving to the northeast at 22 mph and was expected to pass near or just north of Bermuda on Monday.

Parts of South Florida experienced flooding from heavy rain and wind over the weekend. Officials in Miami say many cars were stuck on flooded streets.
